Two covered Volkswagen Beetles, like the ones that last rolled off a nearby production line in 1974, reluctantly wake up after a night of partying. Parked to the right and left of the staircase of Villa Salve Hospes, they greet us in German or English and offer a few words about what has already happened inside the villa and what is yet to come. Their mechanically recited text quotes publications by the Kunstverein Braunschweig, Theodor W. Adorno (loosely), President Ulysses S. Grant, Norman Rockwell, and the host of a podcast for insomniacs.

Ladders and building materials form an ad hoc scaffold across the Gartensaal (Garden Hall). A table rests on the scaffold’s planks. 250 wooden birds, modeled after a decorative stenciled motif the artist viewed at the Städtisches Museum (Municipal Museum) Braunschweig, are densely scattered throughout the room, along with 250 blank metallic buttons (reminiscent of I Voted pins), and 55 wooden baseball bats. A simple wooden structure the size of a typical US refrigerator houses two stacked European refrigerators, like those commonly found in shared kitchens in Germany – or, in this case, at the Kunstverein Braunschweig. One contains a cake from a local bakery. In observance of the US’s semiquincentennial, the Gartensaal has spun out of control, leaving little room to move.

Empty aluminum cans are stacked on a sideboard. The Health-Ade kombucha beverage company produced the souvenir cans in collaboration with the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team. The regional specificity of Dodger fan fever and the wellness industry is exported from the artist’s home in Los Angeles to Braunschweig. "Say hello to more feel-good-gut days! Every can of Health-Ade Kombucha combines thirst-quenching, organic juice with the living probiotics of fermented tea for a deliciously bubbly, gut-healthy beverage.
