Exhibition Text
Wo ich wohne (Where I Live) is an international group exhibition marking the 80th anniversary of Haus am Waldsee – one of Berlin’s oldest institutions for contemporary art. The building was constructed in 1922 as a private residence and has been a public exhibition space since 1946. By looking back to the building’s past, its former residents, and its exhibition history, Wo ich wohne reviews the historical interconnections of this place.
Framed by a large-scale work by contemporary artist Richard Venlet, the exhibition presents both historical and new artistic works by Nigin Beck, Rhea Dillon, Robert Haas, Hannah Höch, Patrick Jolley and Reynold Reynolds, Alexandre Khondji, Atiéna R. Kilfa, Henry Koerner, Yoora Park, Oskar Schlemmer, Renée Sintenis, Ian Waelder, and Frau von Zinowiew. Some of the works were previously exhibited in the early years of the institution, and now, after many decades, return to be shown again. Others trace the ruptures as well as continuities that remain inscribed in the building. Remnants and allusions to the use of the house as both an exhibition space and a residence evoke the past as an atmosphere formed through the collation of fragments.

Alexandre Khondji arranges kick wall panels from horse riding arenas into installations which appear to have an almost choreographic effect (Untitled (Black, Red and Gold Panels), 2026). The colours of the panels echo the national colours of the respective exhibition venue, quietly probing the regulatory mechanisms embedded in notions of statehood.
