Christopher Aque interviewed for Gallery Weekend Berlin
Gallery Weekend Discoveries: Christopher Aque
September 2021
For Gallery Weekend *Discoveries, Sweetwater will present Christopher Aque’s second solo exhibition with the gallery. Through sculpture, photography, and video, Christopher Aque’s work explores the connections of power structures and dynamics to notions of desire and sexuality. Public space is often the site of these investigations, expressing the inherent vulnerability of private desire.
Gallery Weekend Berlin: Where do you come from, what should we know about you and your background?
Christopher Aque: I live in New York, a city full of contradictions.
GWB: What was the inspiration for your current body of worrk?
CA: A year spent in isolation, fearing contagion, fearing the air, fearing proximity. Also the joy of getting close to strangers, of sharing breath.
GWB: Could you describe your upcoming exhibition in a few words/images? What can we expect to see?
CA: Two kiln-formed glass fountains exchange water: swapping spit, always washing up. Six pairs of photographs: the intimacy of strangers, the ebb and flow of the tide.
GWB: Besides your show, what are you looking forward to around the upcoming Gallery Weekend Discoveries?
CA: Crossing an ocean.
